September in the Rain: Saturday 9

Saturday 9: September in the Rain (1956)

*Joining with Sam and the gang for a little fun.  Play along here.

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song refers to "leaves of brown." Can you see any leaves outside your window? What color are they?  It's still dark, so technically, no. However, I saw them just yesterday and they are fading to dull greens, yellowish and yes, brown colors.  I have a feeling this is not going to be a very pretty autumn.  It's been much too dry.

2) It also mentions whispered words of love. What did you say last time you lowered your voice?  Nothing worth repeating.  I was not having a good evening last night and did a lot of muttering under my breath.

3) Clearly this song is about a treasured romantic memory that took place in autumn. Think about your favorite romantic memory. In what season did it take place?  In autumn...as do most of my favorite memories of any kind.  It's my favorite time of year.  We got married in late autumn so, of course, we celebrate our anniversary in the autumn every year....makes for lovely romantic weekends away.

4) This week's featured artist, Julie London, was famous as a singer and actress. Less prominent in her bio is her appearance as a "pin up girl" in Esquire magazine when she was just 17. What's in your resume that you'd prefer to de-emphasize or gloss over?  I can't say that there is anything.

5) Julie recorded more than 30 albums and was named "most popular female vocalist" by Billboard magazine in 1956. If you could see any entertainer -- male or female -- in concert, who would you choose? Hmm...I've seen Toby Keith so many times I'm having all my concert t-shirts made into a quilt.  Otherwise, I'm stumped.  Maybe Billy Joel.

6) She became well-known to another generation when she appeared in the 1970s TV show Emergency! The younger actors credited her for keeping everything calm on the set. Who has a calming influence on you?  Maybe my friend, Fran, to some degree but mostly I'd have to say Jesus. Without my faith, I am a pressure cooker waiting to blow.

7) Her Emergency! costar was her husband, Bobby Troup, and the show was produced by her ex-husband, Jack Webb. Do you have an ex that you're on very good terms with?  Nope.  I'm not actually on bad terms with any of them.  I just don't see them at all.

8) Julie was a chain-smoker since she was a teenager and in the 1950s recorded a jingle for Marlboro cigarettes. Yet in the 1970s, when she saw Bobby Troup's health negatively effected by smoking, she pressed him to quit. Tell us about a time you found yourself in a "do as I say, not as I do" situation.  That's me when it comes to healthy living....diet, exercise, etc.  It's obviously not my lifestyle (I'm trying!) but I preach it at those I love.

9) Random question: You have won an all-expenses paid trip to an exclusive resort in the Hawaii. When you get there, you discover that the private beach is bathing suit optional. Do you swim nude?  In a word....NO!!!!

    1. I really am trying to change that, but stress is a big trigger and I've had a LOT of stress lately.

  5. I like Autumn, too. And yes, I am always telling myself, go on a diet, eat right, blah blah and then the me that goes the grocery shopping picks up a bag of Keebler cookies.

    1. Ah, the me that goes to the grocery store goes straight to the salty carbs. The chip aisle calls like the siren.

  6. Billy Joel was my very first concert. I was thrilled, it was The Innocent Man Tour in 1984. *sigh*

  7. I want to make a quilt with my Mayfaire t-shirts. It's a great way to preserve memories I think. I enjoyed your answers!

    1. I'm actually going to be shipping my t-shirts to Florida! I have a friend who is a cancer survivor and volunteers endlessly for the cure. She cranks out about one quilt a week made of different cancer shirts people send her and then gives them to different groups to raffle. She volunteered to make mine even when I tried to talk her out of it...said she wouldn't have offered if it was too much. She is one of my heroes.

    2. Your friend is a Gem.
My daughter asked me to make slippers, like the red ones on my blog, and short fingered mitts like I made her over the years, for the cancer ward patients at the hospital that cared for her during her long illness. It helps to take the sting out of life.

    3. That's a great thing to do! My mom belongs to a group that knits chemo caps and lap robes. Mom is constantly knitting when she is sitting. I can't knit worth a darn, but she got me a set of looms. I can manage a hat on those. I don't think they are pretty, but I got some more looms and one of these days I'm going to learn how to embellish them.

  8. I'd love to see Billy Joel's song, "She's Always a Woman to Me".

I agree about having faith that Love is the greatest commandment. Such a simple, eternal message, and a simple Commandment to abide by. So easily lost in the noise.
