Clang, Clang, Clang Went the Trolley

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: The Trolley Song (1944)

... Because Stacey suggested Judy Garland. Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this movie clip, just about everyone (except Judy) is wearing a hat. Do you wear hats for fashion, for warmth or for both?  I think I look stupid in hats so you will only see me in one when I need to wear it for warmth or sun protection or to amuse the kids on my bus at Christmas.

2) This song is from Meet Me in St. Louis, which was a huge hit and the second highest grossing movie of 1944. When is the last time you watched a movie in the theater?  My husband and I went to see Suicide Squad last weekend.

3) The movie follows the Smith family as their hometown, St. Louis, to prepares to host the 1904 World's Fair. What's the biggest thing happening in your hometown?  The Pittsburgh Steelers just wrapped up their training camp.  They've been coming to St. Vincent College for forever.

4) This week's featured artist, Judy Garland, is best known as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. That movie is shown so often that Sam thinks she may have seen it a dozen times. Is there a movie or holiday special you've seen over and over?  I know I've seen The Wizard of Oz more than a dozen times.  It used to be on television every year at Thanksgiving.  It was kind of the official kick-off to the holiday season.  In addition to that, I am a Christmas movie junkie, so I've seen tons of movies over and over.  My favorites are A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation.

5) Judy admitted to being perpetually tardy. Are you usually prompt? Or are you always running late?  I used to be the kind of person who was always early for everything, but that must have been my dad's influence.  Over my adult life I've moved into either being late or (barely) on time.  I can't say I like it or that I'm proud of it, but no matter how much I promise myself I won't be late, I still end up being a few minutes late. At least I'm not the type to run really, really late.

6) Judy's first professional performance was a rendition of "Jingle Bells" when she was just two. How old were you when you entered your chosen profession?  I've never actually entered my chosen profession. That would have been reporting and one, I didn't finish my degree, and two, I have lost all respect for the media.

7) Thinking of "Jingle Bells," here's a wintery question for a hot summer day: What's your favorite carol?  Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is my favorite traditional carol.  In other Christmas music, it ain't Christmas till Bing Crosby sings White Christmas (in my humble opinion).

8) Judy was a very demonstrative person. She enjoyed hugs and admitted that, when she nervous, she took emotional support from physically reaching out. Are you demonstrative?  No, not really.  I will gladly respond to hugs and all, but I rarely initiate and only when I know the person well and am comfortable with them.

9) She told Barbara Walters that people would be surprised to learn that she was a good cook and specialized in desserts. Do you have a sweet tooth?  Not really, but I do crave chocolate once in a while.

  1. It must be exciting to have training camp in your town.

  2. I used to love going when I was a kid. It was different then. You could get near the players and they gladly signed autographs and talked with the fans. Now there are so many fans and security and a lot of the players avoid the fans except for the scheduled autograph times (a few I could mention are not very nice at all). I mostly avoid the whole mess, but while they are here you never know who you are going to see in Walmart or when you go out to dinner.

    1. It seems like most of us feel the same way about hats.

    1. Christmas movies are great and the cornier and cheesier they are the more I like them!

  6. You just have to watch those Christmas movies over and over or it's not Christmas.

  7. I didn't wear hats until the need to protect my face. They look like gardener hats and not attractive at all.

Christmas movies are something I look forward to most years.

    1. I think when we get old enough, we stop caring "how it looks" and worry more about comfort and does it do the job I need it to do. I've hit that point.

I get terribly excited when ABC Family begins its 25 Days of Christmas each year.

  8. Wish I could say I only "craved" chocolate "once in a while." I think my blood runs with chocolate through it.

    1. If it makes you feel any better, while the cravings may come once in a while, they are all-consuming until I get my hands on some chocolate!

  9. I think the reason my brother and I are always late is because my father was always early. We will get to mass, or a party and wait out in the car until it was time.
