If I Knew You Were Comin'

Joining in with Sam and the gang

Saturday 9: If I Knew You Were Comin' (1950)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is performed by a woman who is positively tickled to have unexpected company. How do you feel when people drop by unannounced?

I like a warning from those outside the immediate family.  We work long hours and sometimes the house is, uh, in less than pristine condition.  Actually, I kind of appreciate a heads up from family, too, now that I'm thinking about it.  I love my daughter, but she has a knack for showing up and staying when we are not in the mood to deal with people.

2) She is clearly proud of her skills in the kitchen. Do you enjoy baking? Cooking?

I do and love when I have the time to do either. I'm actually pretty good at it. What I don't like to do, however, is the dishes and mess that go along with it.

3) Reference is made to hiring a band. Tell us the last time you were at an event with live music.

I don't even remember.  My husband is a real homebody when he's not working.

4) After making recordings in the early 1950s, Eileen Barton appeared on daytime TV in the early 1960s -- including a game show called Video Village. Let's say we're all headed to a TV game show taping this morning. Would you volunteer to appear as a contestant? Or would you rather just stay in the audience?

I'd volunteer!  I think it would be a hoot....well, maybe except for Jeopardy. That one would probably just make me feel stupid.

5) In 1961, Ms. Barton got married in Juarez, Mexico. What's the longest distance you've ever traveled to attend a wedding?

About 400 miles.

6) In 1950, when this song was popular, the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup. Are you looking forward to the upcoming NHL season?

No. I don't follow hockey at all.

7) 1950 also marks the first time anyone in the United States paid by credit card. Do you pay with a credit card to get rewards? If yes, whatrewards are you accumulating (points, cash back, airline miles)?

Nope. I use a debit card, but refuse to get a credit card.  You can't get into trouble if you don't have one.

8) In 1950, an athlete named Florence Chadwick swam the English Channel. Are you a good swimmer?

I don't think I'd call myself good. How about adequate. I won't drown in a pool. I don't know about in the ocean with tides and all.

9) Random question: Think about the last "white lie" you told. Was it to spare someone's feelings, or to make your day go more smoothly?

I don't know what it might have been, but it was most likely to spare someone's feelings.  I really do try to never lie about anything else....saves on a lot of drama later.  Plus, I just believe it's wrong.

  1. I am so with your answer to #1. Unless someone has just moved in or just had a baby they want to show off, I'm a big believer in meeting in coffee shops. A planned gettogether in a neutral location is so much less stress for everyone!

And I wish I'd had more discipline with my credit cards. Somehow I never thought I'd be this old so I didn't think it would matter. Now I realize that money I could be investing for my retirement is going to Visa and MC.

    1. Agreed! I love to entertain, but I like to do it on my terms when I've had time to prepare the house. But just to get together and chat...let's meet for lunch or something.

We weren't always so anti-credit cards, but we've learned the hard way that my husband has zero impulse control with them. Any time we've ever had one he's had the balance at the limit within a week or two! I've become the credit card nazi..."No card for you!"

  2. Funny you should mention Jeopardy. After reading these questions, I googled Jeopardy and found an online jeopardy quiz. I have to say I am much better at jeopardy when watching someone else play the game. We used to have a Jeopardy game to play on the computer years ago. It was fun.
We keep one credit card and pay it off monthly.

    1. That is how it is with me, too. I may know some answers, but the people who are on the show are so fast and know so much trivia...some of them are almost robotic about it. I don't think I could compete.

  3. I pay our credit cards off monthly. They offer an extra bit of security - if something you purchase breaks right away, for example, and the merchant doesn't make good, VISA will negotiate for you. I have only had to do that once but it worked in my favor. However, if someone has no control over spending, then you are probably doing what you need to do. I think you would be good on Jeopardy - you come across as very intelligent to me.

    1. I would love to have one, but my husband is very impulsive. He isn't diagnosed, but I am sure he has A.D.D. (both of our kids are diagnosed) and impuliveness is part of that package.

  4. Great answers--I haven't been swimming in such a long time I would feel more comfortable in a pool than the ocean.

    1. I don't get in the ocean...not even if I was an olympic swimmer. Jaws scarred me for life. lol

  5. I've gotten to the place where if people surprise us with a visit, they must understand the house might not be pristine and I may not have makeup on. There might not be fresh iced tea in the fridge. Take it as it is, or call ahead. One way or the other, all are welcome.

I enjoy reading your answers today!

    1. I agree, Terri. I'd never turn anyone away, but I'm stressing on the inside (most likely over things the guest doesn't even notice) when someone shows up unannounced.

  6. I like notice, too. Or neutral ground sounds even better! And yes, credit cards were planned to be traps. Looks like it worked, sorry to say.
Jaws was scary, but I've never seen a shark near me around here. Rip currents are the biggest killers. We had to save our twins from one up the coast st Torrey
Pines. It was close, but knowing how is key. So, put a toe in the salt water. It clears your sinus infection right up. *winks*

    1. Nope, can't do it. I remain irrationally convinced that if I put one foot in the ocean every shark in will suddenly turn in my direction and think "YUM!"

  7. I'm with Terri---all are welcome at my house anytime. No need to make an appointment. However, if coming after 7:00 at night or before 9:00 in the morning, better call, otherwise I will be in my jammies.

I'm a Florida gal, so I love the ocean. BUT that's mostly just hanging on the beach and walking in the surf. I might go out to as far as my knees, but no further.

    Blessings,
    Patti
