Saturday 9 - Sara Smile

Hi and welcome to this week's Saturday 9.  It's looking to be a beautiful day here...and a busy one. My son and his family are coming home this morning for the final day of the library's used book sale. Today it's pay $3 for all the books you can stuff in a bag. We are all big readers so we can't pass it up.  After that my daughter, a family friend, and I have to drive north about an hour to a wedding shower for one of my nieces.  My son and his family are going to a local state park while we do that to let the kids swim and run off some steam. At some point we're all coming back home and probably getting pizza for supper from their favorite Italian place.

So, let's get this show on the road!

Saturday 9: Sara Smile (1976)

... Because Kwizgiver suggested Hall & Oates. Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This was Hall & Oates' first #1 hit. Can you name another of their popular songs?  Rich Girl is probably my favorite of their hits.  Private Eyes was also huge for them.

2) Darryl Hall and Sara Allen were a couple for 30 years, and he wrote this at the beginning of their long relationship. That makes this a very public love letter. Are you good at writing love letters? There was a time when I wrote a lot of them and I think I was pretty good at it. Would you rather tell the person how you feel, face to face?  It depends on what I'm telling the person.  If it's something good I'm okay with face to face, but if it's something bad....I'd rather write.  Or do you let your actions speak louder than your words?  I'd say that I do these days.  Nobody writes letters any more and that includes me.

3) In the song, Darryl and Sara are waiting for the sunrise. Did you see the sunrise this morning?   No, I didn't.  Or did you sleep in?  I was up...I just wasn't looking.

4) Both Hall & Oates hail from the Philadelphia area. Hall is a native of suburban Pottstown, which was a stop on the Reading/Philadelphia rail line made famous in Monopoly. Do you like playing board games?  I do, though, not Monopoly.  I loathe Monopoly...unless it's Monopoly Jr.  I didn't mind playing that with my kids.  My great-great aunt from Philadelphia used to love playing Parcheesi so much she'd place bets on it.  She bought me the game set I still own.  Life, however, is my favorite board game.

5) John Oates grew up a few miles away from Pottstown in North Wales. Decades ago, North Wales' biggest employer was a cigar factory. Do you like the smell of a cigar?  Not at all.

6) Daryl Hall now hosts a music show, Live from Daryl's House, that you catch  free online. Do you typically watch shows from your computer, pad, phone or TV set?  I guess that's one way I'm hopelessly old-fashioned.  I only watch shows on the TV.

7) Hall & Oates are currently on tour. Are you seeing/have you seen a concert this summer?  No, I haven't seen any this summer and sadly, there are no plans to see one.  I've already missed the one I'd have most wanted to see, anyway. Guns 'n' Roses played Pittsburgh earlier this week.

8) Daryl and John have been friends for 50 years, even living together at the beginning of their careers when money was tight. Another successful duo of the rock era, Simon & Garfunkle, also met as teens but they forever seem to be feuding. What do you think makes for a lasting friendship/partnership?  Some of the same things that make for a lasting marriage....patience, a willingness to not always have to have your own way, forgiveness (and a willingness to admit you've screwed up when you have), compromise, respect, etc.

9) Random question:  Are you quick to try new things?  It depends what kind of new things we're talking about?  New foods, new movies, new shows, new music, new church, new friends....I'm good with all of that.  Traveling to new places I'm good with, too.  More physical stuff where I could end up getting hurt...as I get older, I'm not so quick to jump in and try that stuff...boo-boos hurt more now and take longer to heal.

That's all for today.  Go enjoy this beautiful Saturday!  I'll meet you back here for
Sunday Stealing.

  1. Now I've got "Rich Girl" stuck in my head. I didn't think I was a Hall & Oates fan until this meme. I'm familiar with every song I've seen for Q1 so far.

    1. Yeah, I don't think I could have named very many songs but when I see them, I know them all. You're welcome for the earworm. :D

  2. I have always liked Hall & Oates so this meme was fun. Sometimes I don't even know the artist they pick (not that it matters with the questions they ask). I agree with your random #9!!

    1. I like them, but they were never a favorite of mine. Once in a while I don't know the artist, but not too often. Yes, the aches of getting older are enough without adding more aches and pains.

  3. I almost forget about Rich Girl. That was a good one.

  4. I am kicking myself for letting the weather dictate my missing the Hall & Oates concert this past Wednesday. It was thunder stormy here but clear as a bell at the outdoor venue.

    1. Yes, never put off a concert unless it's life and death. I will never hear the end from my mother for talking her out of/refusing to go with her to a Ricky Nelson concert on New Year's Eve back in 1985 in Orlando. I said it would be too crowded, no parking, totally unenjoyable...there'd be plenty of other times to see him. Wouldn't you know he was killed in a plane crash that night?

  5. I didn't even know there was a Monopoly Jr. The things I learn from Sat 9.
